Chapter 4

“I don’t want to be here,” AJ grumbled, as she played her Vita. Rachel looked around the uncrowded bar, expectantly. Things were not exactly hopping on a Wednesday night at The Silver Spring.

“Come on, Aje. Your future husband or wife could be here right now. Put the Gameboy down and perk up.”

AJ grumbled and seemed to play her game faster.

“Kids these days, always with their face in a screen,” Rachel said, trying to sound like an old, whiny boomer.

“It’s Wednesday night and we’re at a bar. I don’t want to meet the kind of loser who goes to a bar on the weekdays.”

“Thank you,” Rachel said, as the bartender placed two drinks in front of them. Rachel had ordered a fuzzy navel, while AJ had ordered a glass of plain tap water with no ice.

“How long are you going to make me do this?” AJ asked, who refused to take her eyes off the Vita screen for even a moment.

“Until you get married and have babies. You can’t just hang out in our room every night and play your Gameboy, hoping some guy will come and sweep you off your feet.”

AJ took a deep breath through her nose.

“Don’t you want to meet someone and be happy? I don’t want to see you die alone.” Rachel clung to AJ, with a quivering lip and tears in her ears.

“I’ll die alone if I feel like it. What are we really doing here?” AJ asked.

“To find you a mate, of course.”

AJ set the Vita down and looked at Rachel. “What are we really doing here?”

Rachel’s eyes went wide, as if AJ had just cast a spell on her.

“I, I told you...”

“Is this about Tommy?” AJ asked.

Rachel furrowed her brow and bit her lip.

“I’m not like, good at babysitting you or anything.” AJ sipped her tap water. “I’m not good at relationships or knowing how people are feeling or what they want me to say but you’ve been extra loud since the season started. Like, louder than normal. Are you trying to get attention, or..?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Rachel grabbed her fruity beverage and took a deep draw on her straw.

“I know we weren’t like friends or whatever last season but I wasn’t friends with Deb and Tiana either. I know what happened with you and Tommy but I kept my nose out of it.”

“I know...it was Deb, Tiana, and Trish who were giving me a hard time about it.”

“Trish was and is still my friend, even though she was a vicious gossip. You were nice to her when she really didn’t deserve it. I thought if you let Natty actually beat her up it would have made her stop. I didn’t have a strong opinion of you either way before that, but what Tommy did to you was wrong.”

“I know...” Rachel whispered.

“You sound like you don’t know. You sound like you want to get back together with him.”

“I never said that,” Rachel argued.

“Yeah, but, you never bad mouth him, either.
